After nearly a half-century of setting the standard for trattorias in Italy’s financial and fashion capital, Milanese institution Le Specialità has crossed the Atlantic for its first and only international outpost, arriving in the Miami Design District.
Rooted in Milan’s radical design movement of the 1960s and 1970s and reinterpreted for present-day Miami, the restaurant’s design presents a distinctly retro-chic point of view. Striped leather booths nod to vintage Ferraris, a glossy green lava-stone bar is lined with red leather stools, and a live-action pizza counter is anchored by a striking black-and-white terrazzo mosaic-framed oven. An eclectic art collection curated by Andre Sakhai further connects Milan and Miami, pairing vintage Italian photography with works from Sakhai’s personal archives.

While Miami is hardly lacking in Italian restaurants, this arrival sets itself apart through disciplined execution, excellent sourcing, and a clear respect for tradition. The proof is in the pizza. Le Specialità’s signature and most ordered item is the margherita, a near featherweight, thin-crust pie dressed simply with tomato sauce and cheese, then baked until crisp and balanced. For those looking to build on the classic, there are options like the truffle pizza with truffle mushroom paste and freshly shaved truffle. Handmade pastas follow suit, with standouts including the tonnarelli alla Norma with eggplant and a textbook cacio e pepe that hits every note.

Secondi range from dover sole meunière to veal Milanese, each prepared beautifully. Desserts stay true to form, including a classic tiramisu layered with mascarpone mousse, espresso, ladyfingers, and cocoa. Cocktails are well-executed, but the real strength of the beverage program lies in the 260-label wine list, accented by an exceptional selection of vintage Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello di Montalcino.
In a city that often favors reinvention over refinement, Le Specialità succeeds by doing something rarer, bringing a Milanese original to Miami with distinction.
