This Valentine’s Day, those looking for something special beyond mainstays like cards, chocolates, and roses can find inspiration in the cupid-kissed culinary creations of Miami restaurant and bakery Dos Croquetas. The family-run establishment off Bird Road started taking preorders in January for its two big Valentine specials: heart-shaped ham croquetas (by the dozen) and heart-shaped guava pastelitos (by the pair), both served in custom Valentine boxes. In the run-up to February 14, the croquetas and pastelitos can be ordered for pickup, delivery, or shipped nationwide, depending on date and availability.
“Last year we sold over 10,000 heart-shaped croquetas and 3,000 heart-shaped pastelitos,” says co-owner Alec Fernandez.
Since then, Fernandez and chef Vicky Carballo have added a Hialeah pop-up and a second brick-and-mortar location (on Calle Ocho) to the fold. In addition, those who want a Valentine’s light experience (read: less romance but all the flavor) can order assorted party-size croquetas (in a standard smaller shape and multiple flavors beyond ham) by the dozen and have them packaged in a Valentine box.
