3 South Florida Events to Attend in July

Cirque du Soleil Corteo, poolside flip flops and margaritas, and Fourth of July celebrations at Cantina Laredo are the hot topics in this month's mix

Clowning Around

Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo brings its shock and awe to South Florida this month.

Corteo, the latest and most enchanting Cirque du Soleil’s arena production, is coming to Sunrise’s BB&T Center Arena for a limited run of 16 performances from July 24 to August 4. The unique production, with a cast of 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from around the world, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005; since then, the show has amazed 8 million people in 19 countries on four continents. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession imagined by a clown who pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. Tickets are available at cirquedusoleil.com/corteo.

The Keys to Happiness

Poolside margaritas and flip-flops—delivered right to your chaise lounge.

As Jimmy Buffett once sang, it’s common for vacationers to “blow out their flip flop.” The Keys Collection, a unique group of hotels in Key West, has partnered with Kino Sandals, a world-famous sandal factory in Old Town Key West, to launch a one-hour sandal delivery program for hotel guests. Now, hotel guests can order a pair or three of these handmade Key West souvenirs from the front desk and have them delivered directly to their hotel door within one hour. (They can also purchase the sandals pre-arrival and have them waiting for them upon check-in.) The service is offered daily at The Gates Hotel Key West and the 24° North Hotel. The program offers the classic thong-style sandals for kids and adults for under $21 including tax. “Countless travelers visit our stores each day because of a sandal mishap while on vacation,” says Kinos manager Robert Ruiz. “We’re grateful that The Keys Collection recognizes Kinos as a Key West staple and wants to partner with us for this opportunity.” Kinos, a local sandal factory and retail store that has operated in Key West for over 50 years, was founded by an entrepreneurial Cuban exile named Robert T. Lopez and his wife Margot. Since then, the business continues to live on by Lopez’s family, which includes longstanding employees who make leather sandals by hand.
