Game Changers

BY ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON
We all want to age like Helen Mirren or J. Lo—but sometimes the only option is to fake it till you make it. From blasting your face with freezing liquid nitrogen to using heat to tighten all that droops and sags, here are 7 of the latest and greatest beauty breakthroughs.

1. ThermiTight
Bat wings. Turkey neck. Droopy knees. Sagging skin gives aging a bad name. If you want to tighten up loose skin but avoid surgery, ThermiTight is the new non-invasive kid on the block to treat the lower face, neck, arms, knees and abdomen. The procedure is simple: A tiny probe is inserted under the skin, where radiofrequency energy heats up the targeted tissue to boost collagen production and, ultimately, create smoother, tighter skin. “ThermiTight is different from other radiofrequency devices because it has a precise temperature control feature. This allows the operator to know exactly how much heat to deliver and when to stop, thus achieving the maximum tightening result without burning,” says Jenya Titova, aesthetic medicine director of Hochstein Medspa. The two-hour procedure involves almost zero downtime (with minimal swelling and bruising), but since collagen needs to grow, you might not see results for up to a year. However, doctors say those results are long-lasting, so only one treatment is needed. Prices start at $3,500. Hochstein Medspa, 585 NW 161 St., Miami, 305.931.3338; lhochsteinmd.com

2. CryoFacial
You’ve probably seen all the athletes shivering in those frigid cryo chambers to restore their bodies after a workout or competition. Now that same technology is being used for a youthful glow—think of it as “frotox” for the face. During the 12-minute Cryo Facial, a wand puffs out vaporized liquid nitrogen that’s cooled to freezing temperatures on the face and neck. “The vaporized nitrogen freezes the collagen in your skin, which helps firm and tighten skin, resulting in a restored youthful glow. It’s the perfect beauty booster before going to any big event, as the results are almost immediate,” says Laurence Luckmann, co-owner of Cryo Miami. Of course, this isn’t a one-and-done type of treatment; you’ll need at least two to three weekly treatments over the course of a month to see a real change. Intro sessions start at $35; packages are $99 and up. Cryo Miami, 430 S. Dixie Hwy., Coral Gables, 305.456.0684; cryo-miami.com

3. Juvéderm Vollure XC
Love to smile, but hate your smile lines? Doctors are adding the newest hyaluronic acid dermal filler, Juvéderm Vollure XC, to their arsenal to correct facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, those pesky indentations that run from both sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. The big news here is that Vollure is reported to last longer than most fillers on the market. “Studies have shown that Vollure lasts up to 18 months with patient satisfaction extremely high,” says Dr. Leonard Tachmes, medical director at Atma Beauty’s new mini med-spa, who also points out that there’s less post-treatment swelling for patients. “Vollure is soft and less bulky, which makes it better for treating nasolabial folds and superficial wrinkles around the mouth, and it offers more subtle, natural-looking lip augmentation.” That should make you smile. 4. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Remember when Kim Kardashian made the bloody “Vampire Facial” famous? Now, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is helping to combat dreaded hair loss in men and women. Like something out of a sci-fi movie, doctors draw the patient’s own blood, then spin it around in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the plasma and platelet stem cells. The platelets are then extracted and injected into the scalp where patients see thinning. “Good candidates for PRP are men and women that are in the early stages of thinning hair. It is important for the candidate to have active or somewhat active follicles,” says Dr. Jhonny Salomon, who also points out that PRP has been shown to reactivate inactive follicles over time in balding patients. Dr. Salomon suggests four to six treatments one month apart, and while results last up to 18-24 months, yearly touch-up treatments are recommended. 5. Silhouette InstaLife/Nova Threads
If you’re looking for an instant (and painless) facelift, new skin-suspending threads provide a natural-looking solution—just don’t call it a “thread lift”. “Unfortunately, thread lifts in the past were synonymous with complications and poor results due to the permanent nature of the material,” says Dr. Roberta Del Campo, who offers two different types of temporary lifts. “Today’s threads are absorbable, meaning the body naturally breaks them down over time. This is not only ideal for an aging face, but it also allows for correction.” The Silhouette InstaLift uses tiny threaded biodegradable cones and offers uplifting results up to two years, and NovaThreads come in a variety of thickness with tiny “hooks” to lift the skin with results lasting nine to 12 months. The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes, and while a lifting effect is seen immediately, the threads actually stimulate collagen, so the skin quality will continue to improve. “Ideally, this procedure is best for someone with mild to moderate laxity and someone who has good skin quality to support the underlying threads.” Prices range from $1,000-$5,000. 6. Lash Bash
Sometimes all it takes is staring at the eye-popping lashes of a friend to make you covet a product, and that’s just what’s happening with Lash Boost, a new serum made by mega-beauty brand Rodan + Fields. Spoiler alert: It really works, and demand is so high that it’s hard to get your hands on. “Lash Boost is a nightly eyelash-conditioning serum that features a unique proprietary formula that improves the appearance of lash volume and length. If applied daily, consumers can get lush, longer-looking lashes in as little as four weeks,” says Dalia Stoddard, VP of Product Development, who recommends using the serum for eight weeks. Unlike other lash serums, you won’t need a prescription from a dermatologist—you can buy it from a RF sales consultant for $150. rodanandfields.com

7. CoolSculpting
“Freezing fat” to slim down isn’t necessarily new, but doctors say the technology isn’t cooling off—it’s only improving, thanks to the ever-evolving CoolSculpting. “This technology has been getting better and better over the last seven years,” says Dr. Andres Sarraga of the machine that uses targeted cooling to destroy fat cells below the skin. During the 35-minute treatment, an applicator is placed over the desired area (think back fat, love handles, hips, or double chin) and freezes the fatty deposits. This causes cell death, and over the next few weeks your body will naturally get rid of the fat cells. The latest target of CoolSculpting: the arms. “The new applicator, CoolAdvantage Petite, is an FDA-approved applicator to freeze the excess fatty deposits of the arms, treating the third most problematic area in the body.” Dr. Sarraga also uses the new applicator to banish fat on the inner knee, bra fat, and small areas that are left behind after liposuction. Prices range from $700-$1,350. Storch Sarraga Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 21110 Biscayne Blvd. #103, Aventura, 305.932.3200; andressarragamd.com
